Abstract:
“Authentication” is how you prove to an application that you are really you and have the right to use that app. In the old days this was always by use of a username and a password, hopefully secret and unique. But passwords have a way of inadvertently getting exposed.
Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) is the use of at least 2 of 3 “factors” to authenticate yourself:
-Something you know (like a password or PIN)
-Something you have (like a hardware token or smartcard)
-Something you are (like a fingerprint or retinal pattern)
(From FNAL Computing Security, Irwin Gaines)
