Abstract:
The continual production of electron-ion pairs in a liquid argon detector leads to a bulk charge density in the liquid, because the electron and ion drift velocities are very different. The resulting positive space charge distribution perturbs the nominal electric field in the detector, particularly if it is close to the surface.

This note presents a 1-dimensional approximation to the perturbed electric field. The situation in a 3-dimensional detector is more complicated, such that straight tracks would be reconstructed as curved if corrections for space charge are not applied.
