[MIGRATED] CFD Simulation of 24,000 SCFM Argon Leak in Cavern Pit

Abstract:
[MIGRATED TO EDMS] We use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods to simulate the flow and diffusion of an argon leak near the bottom of the DUNE cryostat. We simulate how the argon diffuses and spreads throughout the cavern, and the corresponding oxygen levels. The leak is 24,000 SCFM of argon gas (19.1 kg/sec) which comes from a liquid leak (217 gpm) which then boils to 88K argon gas. The leak continues at this rate for 2.25 minutes, at which point it is stopped, and the simulation continues until the gas spill behavior is understood .
We include the ventilation system which brings in 15,000 SCFM fresh air into the cavern at the top, and vents out 15,000 SCFM air equivalent mass at the bottom of the cryostat. An opening to the adjacent cavern is included in the model as well.
